Ellen van Kester, Horticola Guadalfeo:

“Blue Marazul tomato very popular on Spanish market”

Spain hasn’t yet had many tomatoes available for export. “Up till now, the tomatoes came from Sierra, but these productions in the mountains are now reaching their end. These tomatoes are not export quality any more either. In coming weeks, more supply of new production from the coastal region will become available,” says Ellen van Kester of Horticola Guadalfeo from Motril.

Horticola Guadalfeo has started focusing on the national market more and more in recent years, because of the advantage of year-round supply. The company is specialised in speciality tomatoes. “Besides the permanent assortment, we have a new tomato exclusively for Guadalfeo this year, the Marazul. This tomato is distinctive because of its blue colour,” Ellen says. “This tomato is already very popular in Spain. Sales are showing an increasing line. Many of the Spanish supermarkets made this tomato part of their assortment,” Ellen says.

According to Ellen, the tomato is distinctive in other regards besides its colour. “The University of Granada compared this tomato to red tomatoes, and the biggest difference is that Marazul tomatoes clearly contain more vitamins B6 and C. This tomato also contains many antioxidants.”
