Consumption potato harvest 30 per cent higher

CBS harvest estimate is for a gross yield of 1,513,000 tonnes

According to harvest estimates of the CBS (the Dutch Central Agency for Statistics), the seed onion harvest of 2017 will amount to a gross yield of 1,513,000 tonnes. This is a record. The average yield would, in this case, amount to 56.7 tonnes per hectare. In 2016, gross yield was 52 tonnes per hectare, in 2017 it’s more than 57 tonnes. Stefaan van Haecke responded to the harvest estimate on Twitter: “We did not see this coming. We did not see this growing here, nor do we see this in our sheds!”

The gross consumption potato harvest amounts to 4,012,000 tonnes, 30 per cent more than a year before. Per hectare, that amounts to a gross yield of 52.6 tonnes. That is 27 per cent more than last year, when the yield amounted to 3.159 million tonnes, and 44.4 tonnes per hectare was estimated.
