A Russian "News Report" published on October 25th, claimed that a kind of critical fungus may be destroying all the bananas on the globe. This news caused even the United Nations to feel a little worried. The newspaper article reports that the UN has already pulled out 980 thousand USD to deal with the infectious situation. To get rid of the potential losses; this amount of money is not that big. Losses in the banana production might go up to 100 million USD. The infection could endanger 1,500,000 hectares of plantations, or one sixth of the total global output.
Experts state that the situation is catastrophic. Because bananas are the best selling fruit in the world, they are also the source of revenue and nutrients for 4 million people. The announcement reports that this kind of fungus was discovered first during the 90's of the last century in South Asia. Since that time, the fungus has only appeared in 19 banana producing regions in the Middle-East, South Asia and the African Sahara Desert.
