China: Leek prices up 10-20% in comparison to last year
Winter is coming and markets filled with leeks and white cabbages from storage are not far off. Storehouses in places like Shandong and Hebei have already hit the market now. The prices are a little more expensive than previous years.
The price for leeks is 10-20% higher, the current price for leeks from Shandong has reached 4.4 RMB per kilogram, and leeks from Hebei are going for 3 RMB per kilogram. The leeks in Shandong were strongly impacted by this year's temperature drop and heavy rainfall. The output was reduced by 10-30%. However, the area used to grow leeks in Hebei was not reduced, so plants have grown well there and can perhaps make up for the loss. In the north, storing white cabbages and leeks during winter is a tradition. Currently, leeks from winter storehouses are starting to enter the market and are being sold at the market price. This is to some extent because storehouse leeks are supplied. In addition to this, the increase in costs for production and transportation have also had a large influence on the trend for the leek prices.
