Richard Soepenberg, Frunet:

"Overproduction threat due to massive switch to organics"

The organic greenhouse vegetable area in Spain is rising and this has had an impact on the market. "We haven't had the best prices either in the winter or the summer season. The massive switch from conventional to organic will certainly be of influence," says Richard Soepenberg, commercial manager of the organic branch of Frunet from Malaga.

Not too fast

"The switch to organic shouldn't happen too quickly," the Dutchman warns. "The large conventional players are free to step into the organic cultivation, but they have to have the customers for it. I'm convinced that the existing organic companies will remain in the end."

Frunet has a conventional branch, which imports pineapples from Costa Rica for instance, and an organic branch, where greenhouse vegetables are the main product. Volume wise the cherry tomatoes are the largest organic product. Richard is positive about the Fruit Attraction. "We gained a number of new customers during the fair last year. Of course a stall is an expense, but with new customers you make up for those costs."

The Spanish organic mango season is now halfway through and Richard looks back at it positively. "We had more kilos and higher prices. The demand for organics continues. There is no decrease to been seen in it yet. The expansion of the organic area will have to continue at the same rate, otherwise the prices will be under a lot of pressure due to overproduction."
