Demand for Indonesian fruits on the rise

Although Java Fresh is based in Indonesia, they have an office in Brittany, France.

“More than 80% of our business is in Europe,” says Sophie Garre, the company’s European manager. "It’s easier to stay in touch with our European buyers when you have someone within the same time zone"

She co-ordinates with her colleagues in Indonesia on a daily basis. “As we collaborate directly with the farmers, we have to keep each other informed on what quantity of fruit is harvested, what percentage of the harvest went through our sorting process, what quantity is then finally available for our buyers."

"When handling sourcing, sorting, packing as well as transportation, communication and planning are key to be able to satisfy our buyers’ needs."

"The company is very new. It was only established in end-2014. We focus on providing 100% natural and delicious Indonesian fruits that not many people consume yet."

"The goal is to bring more awareness about Indonesian food, taste and cuisine to the EU. Despite facing many challenges on our first year breaking the EU market, we have had the chance to build trusting and long term collaboration with some EU importers."

Java Fresh exports primarily mangosteens, kaffir limes and snakefruits via air freight to European countries, such as France, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

“We are in the process of developing new collaborations in other EU countries, as well as in other region like Asia and Australia for our coconuts and snake fruits "

At the moment, Java Fresh is the only company supplying the European companies with fruits, such as mangosteens. "The Thai and Vietnam seasons are over so Indonesia is currently the main country supplying mangoesteens.

"By having great relationships with the farmers, we are able to source the few mangoesteens available. We have lots of demand from the EU so it is challenging to please everyone."

Aside from mangosteens, kaffir limes, and snake fruits, Java Fresh is also trying to develop markets for other exotic fruits from Indonesia, such as red-flesh dragon fruits, bird eyes chilli, as well as kalamanci lime.

"People have yet to completely realise the delicious food Indonesia has to offer so we are very excited for what the future holds "
