Michoacan, Mexico's top strawberry producer

Ruben Medina Niño, the undersecretary of Productive Development of the Ministry of Rural Development and Agricultural Food (SEDRUA), said that in 2016 Michoacan had produced 273,464 tons of strawberry on 5,870 hectares, which left an economic spill of 3.4 billion dollars.

Of the total produced, Michoacan exported 95 percent to the United States, their main destination, followed by Canada, and minimally to Europe and Asian countries, as Spain also produces this product.

"We have a binational relationship with the United States because we send them the strawberry we produce in the winter season and they send us the one they harvest in their winter season, so its a close relationship in that sense."

In turn, the national president of the strawberry product, Octaviano Magaña Ortiz, said that each hectare of strawberry production in Mexico generated 2 thousand direct jobs.

He also said that, since this product is very important in Michoacan, Expofresa Mexico 2017 (Expo Strawberry Mexico 2017) would be held on October 26, 27, and 28 in the municipality of Zamora. The attendees to the event will be able to buy strawberries and listen to different presentations for producers.
