Have foreign seeds affected the market for seeds in China? At the press conference hosted by the Agriculture Department, Xiaoling Wu, vice president of the National Seed Management Bureau, pointed out that we should welcome quality seeds, whether they come from our own country or any other country.
She said that there are normally two channels for seeds from other countries to enter the market in China. The first one is developed through breeding by foreign companies inside China, and the other is imported directly from outside of China and sold here as a commodity, the majority of which are for vegetables.
Wu also gave three suggestions.
1. Import quality seeds to improve the variety of vegetables available in the market.
2. Such imports will fill in the blank when the supply of domestic seeds is low, which works well for many countries in the world.
3. The import of seeds can also help improve the germplasm resources and our ability to innovate in farming.
