Peter Wijnen, Frankort&Koning:

“Overproduction causes difficult leek market”

Peter Wijnen from Frankort&Koning would like to be positive about the leek market, but not many positive things can be said about the market at the moment. “From the middle of the summer we have been dealing with an enormous surplus. Demand is normal for the time of year, but the leek has grown so well there’s now an overproduction.”

“The other leek producing countries don’t have shortages either, meaning the ‘gap-filling’ Netherlands are at the bottom of the list for now,” the exporter continues. He expects the coming period will continue to be difficult. “Plenty of kilos will continue to be supplied for now. Towards winter we’ll have to await the weather a bit.”

“Auction prices are currently even below 20 cents. Especially for growers it’s dramatic at the moment, but the situation is difficult for mercantile houses and exporters as well. Qualitatively, there are also some problems, due to fast ripening and thrips. We can only hope prices will improve soon,” Peter concludes.
