Mexican lime prices and trading margins

Last August, the price paid for Mexican lime, or sour lime with seed to producers in the producing regions of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, and Oaxaca, as well as the wholesale quotations in central markets, consumer prices in selected cities in the country, and the trading margins of the fruit originating from Colima in wholesale centers, self-service chains, and traditional stores that operate in the selected cities, were as follows:

Prices paid to producers ($/kg)
In September, the highest average monthly price paid to Mexican lime producers in the fields, collection centers and packing houses of the states that produce the highest volume of citrus in the country were recorded in the state of Michoacán, 6.94 $/kg, followed by Oaxaca, 6.86 $/kg, and Guerrero, 5.73 $/kg, while the lowest price, 4.87 $/kg, was recorded in the citrus region of Colima. 

According to data from the Mexico's Lime Product System (SIPROLIMEX), between January and September 2017, the price paid to lime producers in the fields of the Colima state showed the following behavior: in January the price of the fruit was of 8.50 $/kg. In February it increased to 14.61 $/kg. In March it reached its highest level, 17.48 $/kg, and then it decreased the subsequent months. In April it stood at 13.30 $/ kg and in May, at 4.56 $/kg. In June it registered a slight recovery and went to 5.13 $/kg, but in July prices decreased slightly reaching their lowest point, 4.46 $/kg. In August they had a slight recovery and stood at 6.42 $/kg, and in September they went down again and stood at 4.87 $/kg. 

Wholesale prices ($/kg)
According to official data from the National Information System on Market Integration (SNIIM) of the Ministry of Economy, the current wholesale prices of Mexican lime No. 5 in the wholesale centers and supply centers that commercialize the fruit of Colima origin are as follows: The highest price, 20.55 $/kg, is found at Tijuana's INDIA Supply Central, BC, followed by the Merchants Union of la Paz, BCS, 19.00 $/kg, the Felipe Angeles Market in Guadalajara, Jal., 17.75 $/kg, the Distribution Centers of the city of Colima, Col, 17.00 $/kg, the ESTRELLA Market of San Nicolas de Garza, NL, 16.76 $/kg., La Laguna de Torreon Supply Center, Coah., 15.84 $/kg, the Supply Market of Guadalajara, Jal., 15.00 $/kg, the Francisco Villa Supply Central of Durango, Dgo., 14.11 $/kg, the Francisco I. Madero Supply Central of Hermosillo, Son., 13.34 $/kg, and the Supply Market of Zacatecas, Zac, 12.90 $/kg. 

Retail prices for consumers ($/kg)
According to data from INEGI, the highest monthly average retail price in the selected cities, 28.42 $/kg, was found in supermarket chains and traditional stores operating in the city of Tijuana, BC. It was followed by La Paz, BCS, with 26.41 $/kg, Monterrey, NL, 23.62 $/kg, Torreon, Coah., 22.29 $/kg, Hermosillo, Son., 21.61 $/kg, Durango, Dgo., 19.89 $/kg, City of Colima, Col., with 18.34 $/kg, Aguascalientes, Ags., 17.75 $/kg, and the lowest consumer price was detected in the city of Fresnillo, Zac., 17.23 $/kg. 

Trading margins (%)
The highest trading margins, i.e. the difference between the wholesale price at the selected wholesale centers and the price paid to the farmer in the field, were observed at Tijuana's INDIA Supply Center, BC (MC: 322%); Monterrey's Supply Market, NL, (MC: 243%), and Guadalajara's Supply Market, Jal., (MC: 208%).

The gross margins between the monthly average wholesale price at Tijuana's INDIA Supply Central, BC,(20.55 / kg), and the average price paid to the producer of Mexican lemon in the citrus region of Tecoman, Col., (4.87 $/kg), stood at 15.68 $/ kg.

Meanwhile, the largest trading margin regarding retail sales price in supermarket chains, supermarkets, and traditional stores, and the price paid to the farmer in the field, was recorded in the city of Tijuana, BC, (MC: 483%); followed by Monterrey, NL, (385%), and the city of Guadalajara, Jal., (MC: 274%). 

The gross margins between the monthly average retail price at retail chains, supermarkets, and traditional stores operating in the city of Tijuana, BC, (28.42 $/kg), and the average monthly price paid to the Mexican lemon producer in the citrus region of Tecoman, Col., (4.87 $/kg), stood at 23.55 $/kg.

Production volumes (in tons)
During September, the citrus region of Colima, Col., led production with 14,700 tons (49%); followed by Michoacan, with 9,800 tons (33%); Guerrero, with 1,040 tons (15%), and Oaxaca, 4,400 tons (3%). Together, these entities produced more than 29,940 tons, i.e. 6% less than in August, when production stood at 31,860 tons.
