China: Japanese Aomori apples offer consumers a deliciously sweet taste

"The Japanese Aomori apples appeared at the beginning of the 80's. They were brought into Qingdao and surroundings by farmers from Japan. From the beginning, they were very popular amongst consumers, because they were crunchy, juicy, sweet, and had a thin skin. Over the past few years, because of the quick development of the distribution industry, we were also able to sell these unique apples in the southern cities, where they received a positive market response," according to Mr. Liu Wei of Xiamen Xin Wei Hong Trade Co Ltd. (Qingdao Aomori Future Fruit Industry).

"Because of the climate, the production of Japanese Aomori apples starts around September 20th every year, and lasts for one month. This means that they are filling a market gap, right before the high quality Fuji apples enter the market. Their convenient entrance on the market right before the National Holiday and their honey sweet taste, gives Japanese Aomori apples very optimistic sales prospects."

"There are only 4 hectares (38 mu) of Japanese Aomori apple production in China, mainly in the hills southwest of Qingdao. The technical team of our Qingdao Agricultural Service Agency guide the farmers in green production to guarantee the product quality. Of all the different apple breeds, the production of Japanese Aomori apples is rather limited. They can be seen as a high-end apple breed. Currently, we mostly sell them to distributors and supermarkets in Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Fujian, where they have already obtained impressive sales records."
