Spain: Mandarins with leaf as mark of differentiation

In recent years, the high number of citrus producers and the greater production volumes on the market have pushed small growers to seek a mark of differentiation in order to gain some market share. It is for this reason that they have focused on specialising in the cultivation, harvesting and sale of mandarins with leaf. "Our product is mostly intended for small stores, small supermarkets, retailers, etc. We know that we have a reduced and very specific market," explains Salvador Badenes, head of Frutas Bapesal.

The Valencian company produces about 1,000 tonnes each season, with the Clemenrubí, Oronules or Clemenules varieties (always with leaf) standing out the most. And every season, 90% of its production is demanded by countries like Germany or France. However, Spain is not the only country with companies that have decided to adopt this differentiation strategy. Morocco, Corsica, Greece and Italy also sell this product in the international market.

"It is difficult to talk about prices, because they depend on the destination, the customer and the moment of the season, but we can say that they are not very different to those of leafless mandarins. I estimate there may be an average difference of between 5 and 10%."
