Finnish retailer K Group has said that its efforts to reduce food waste in its stores are proving effective, and waste is currently decreasing by 1-2% each year. This is part of the retailer's target, which was set in 2013, to reduce food waste from its K-Food stores by 10% by 2020.

French retailer Franprix has launched a new convenience store concept, Franprix Noé, which will have a focus on gourmet, organic, and local produce. The retailer describes the store as a place for urban customers who want to shop in a responsible manner, and has already opened two outlets in Paris.

UK retailer Waitrose has highlighted an increase of 2.8% in sales last week, mainly driven by its half price event and the marketing campaign for its 'essential' private label range. The 'essential Waitrose' products that experienced a growth in sales includes croissants, which were up 232%, baked beans (+142%), and fish fingers (+95%).

oard change signals impatience in U.S.
An executive change overseas could be a signal of distress over Lidl’s nascent U.S. invasion, reports out of Europe this week suggested. The German business trade newspaper Lebensmittel Zeitung, citing confidential sources, reported that Michael Arnada, the former CEO of Lidl Spain, would be appointed to a Lidl divisional board with oversight of the U.S. — the highest level of leadership behind the company’s board of directors and its demanding CEO Klaus Gehrig. Arnada is said to be replacing Daniel Marasch in that role.

Grocery shopping can feel like you’re navigating through an obstacle course filled with crowded parking lots, long lines and screaming kids. But a growing number of Americans are checking off their grocery lists without even walking inside the store. San Francisco resident Allison Howard gets her groceries delivered to her home about once a week through Instacart. The busy mother of four places an order online for items in at least two or three stores, including Costco, where time flies when you’re munching on free samples.

ALDI US wins 'Best of the Best' EPA GreenChill award for transcritical CO2
ALDI US accepted the “Best of the Best” GreenChill award as part of a Tuesday morning awards ceremony at the Energy and Store Development Conference in Orlando, Fla. Tom Land, manager of the Environmental Protection Agency's GreenChill Partnership, presented the awards. The Best of the Best award recognizes the best GreenChill certified store among all stores certified in the past year. As of August 2017, 43 of ALDI's 69 transcritical CO2 stores had been awarded GreenChill Platinum certification with more new and remodeled transcritical stores in the process of receiving this certification. The Best of the Best award applies to all of ALDI's Platinum stores.
