Spain: New mandarin and orange varieties tested in Murcia

The Council of Agriculture of Murcia is testing the cultivation of new mandarin and orange varieties in the Centre for Integrated Training and Agrarian Experiences (Cifea) of Torre Pacheco. The goal is to study their agronomic behaviour in the climatic conditions of Campo de Cartagena.

The Council is also considering the need to modernise the plantations in order to obtain a more competitive product, mainly through the introduction of new varieties (early and late) and the use of protection facilities that can help improve the quality and the production and extend the marketing season.
 
Spain is the main European producer of oranges and mandarins and the Region of Murcia is the region with the third largest citrus production. Worthy of note, however, is that in recent years, the sector has been suffering the impact of the growing competition from Mediterranean countries and from some in the southern hemisphere, such as South Africa, Argentina or Brazil.
 
The tests started in 2016 on a 3,000 square metre plot, where 11 rows of mandarin and orange trees were planted, with a total of 120 trees. The mandarin varieties planted are called Marisol, Orogros, Iwasaki, Nero, Oronules, Arrufatina, Basol, Cultiflor and Clemenrubi. The orange varieties are the Navelina and Navelin M7.

The goal is to continue the tests for up to 10 years, aiming for long-term results.
 
The new varieties can be adapted to areas with mild winters and allow for early harvesting, thus offering an alternative to current citrus and horticultural crops due to the different harvesting seasons.
 
There is also an environmental efficiency plan in place in order to reduce waste, emissions and the consumption of inputs and to ensure the project is carried out in a sustainable way.
 
The Council will publish the partial results of each year of production through reports and technical days from the third year after the planting. There will also be publications with the results obtained and the cultivation techniques developed from the fifth year after the planting.
