Spain: There is increasingly more cheap and high quality fruit on the internet
At present, our daily occupations take up a lot of time. So much so, that sometimes we cannot even go shopping quietly to the supermarket or greengrocer. A study carried out last month by Sunzest Fruits has aimed to find out what is helping break the barriers preventing the purchases of fruit online.
A more digitised society than ever
More and more people are no longer going to shops and order everything they need from the internet. But why is this? Although it may be more expensive than going to the grocery store, there are many reasons why it is more convenient to buy fruit online, whether for convenience, sustainability or price. However, it is also true that online shopping is often cheaper because it saves staff costs.
Also, online shopping eliminates hard-to-save geographical barriers. For example, buying quality oranges in central and northern Spain is very complicated if it is not done online. Otherwise, you have to go to very trustworthy stores to make sure that the orange is 100% Valencian.
Increasingly more cheap and quality fruit is found on the internet than in supermarkets and greengrocers
There is an unfounded belief that buying fruit online may be a little more expensive than going personally to the grocery store or greengrocer, but this is actually not true.
For example, comparing the price per kilo of the main Spanish supermarkets with those of the main platforms to buy oranges online, we find that the price is very similar, and even lower in the case of e-commerce, and this while also offering higher quality and freshness.
Supermarkets "hide" it by selling smaller or bulk formats, so the price seems smaller. Moreover, as we said, the quality and freshness is much greater, as the fruit is shipped directly from the field to the customer's home.
This is the main factor that is positively changing the consumers' perceptions when it comes to the online purchase of oranges in particular, and of fruit in general.
The habit of buying fruit online is still rare
Although it is still a rare habit which we need to get used to, buying fruit online is not as strange as it seems. Receiving at home just what you need can be very advantageous: it saves time and the tedious effort of going to the supermarket carrying the weight of the products.
The convenience of receiving the fruit directly at home is what is most appreciated, because according to a sample of 1,000 people surveyed, 62% affirm that they like the fact that the purchases are brought to the very door of their home or office, and usually in less than 24 hours from the time the order was placed.
This is the main reason to buy fruit on the internet, because sometimes it is not easy to go to the supermarket, mostly because our daily duties and obligations leave us with very little time available.
Most online fruit purchases are carried out on days of rest
Most stores close on days of rest, and this motivates people to try buying online and not wait until the next business day to make the purchase.
This is one of the reasons why people in society are gradually becoming more confident about buying fruit on the internet. Simply searching what you need, paying and getting the order delivered by express courier is just very convenient.
Impulsiveness is a factor that helps boost online shopping
Avoiding impulse purchases in physical stores or, in this case, supermarkets, is another determining factor when choosing to buy online. According to the sample surveyed, people are more concerned about their health and try to avoid all kinds of temptations, such as sweets, fried foods or soft drinks.
It is also becoming easier to find a reliable supplier for online purchases, as the number of operators and the range of services on offer is on the rise.
