Xian Huang (Yex) on the start of the Chinese pomelo season:

“Pink and orange fleshy pomelos are increasingly popular”

For the third weekin a row, Chinese pomelos have arrived in the Netherlands. In the past few weeks, at least 120 containers have entered the Port of Rotterdam. Yesterday, Yex received their first supply of honey-pomelos. “Compared to the arrivals from last week, the fruit is much juicier and tastier,” says product manager Xian Huang. Yex uses so-called ‘bagged fruit’ for the pomelos under the Discovered brand, which makes its appearance much more appealing.

“The total Chinese pomelo production will be 30 per cent higher this year. It’s expected that 15 per cent more pomelos will be available for export. Prices started much lower than at the beginning of last season. Between August and February, good volumes of Chinese pomelo will be available at fair prices,” says Xian Huang. He says that when the weather circumstances turn colder, customers start eating more pomelos. “Most German retailers will start their programmes from week 40.”

The EU is a good buyer of Chinese pomelos. Chinese export statistics show that the country has exported as much as 80 per cent of their pomelo export to the EU during the 2016/17 season. “EU customers like the taste of the pomelos,” Xian says. “While the white fleshy pomelos were much exported in the past, more pink and orange fleshy pomelos are available nowadays as well, thanks to the large demand from the EU.”

To supply their EU customers year-round, Yex also supplies Vietnamese and Thai pomelos to the Scandinavian market. “Our goal is make exotics, such as the pomelo, common, so that customers can enjoy this delicious fruit every day. And that’s fortunately bearing fruit, because the popularity of pomelos is gradually increasing!”
