Calypso® Mangoes

Early start for Calypso Mangoes

The Australian company Perfection Fresh has had an early start for its season of Calypso Mangoes. The campaign has begun a month earlier than usual and will be available through retail channels from September until January. According to CEO Michael Simonetta, the main reason for the early start was a warmer winter in the growing region of the company.

“The NT mango trees are flowering early which means Calypso® Mangoes will be plentiful and available before the traditional mango season starts in October,” said Simonetta. “Harvest will begin mid-September and Calypso® Mangoes will appear on the shelves soon after, with peak volumes available from November.”

According to Simonetta, the quality of this year’s fruit is looking very promising. “We’ll begin harvest once the conditions are perfect to ensure that we are supplying the great tasting Calypso Mangoes that Australians are expecting,” he said.

As a company, Perfection Fresh is licensed to market Calypso Mangoes. In order to produce Calypso Mangoes, Perfection Fresh is working closely with a network of growers in Darwin, Katherine and Northern and South East Queensland. The production volume per annum is estimated at over 30 million pieces of fruit. Production is mainly concentrated in the Top End region in the northern part of Australia.

Calypso Mangoes were developed by combining the Kensington Pride and Sensation varieties. The mango is characterised by its nice blush skin and a shelf life that is longer than most other varieties. Calypso Mangoes also have smaller seeds than other mango types, which allows for more flesh. The structure of the flesh is firm and smooth, making it an ideal ingredient for smoothies, juices and chutneys.
