Argentina: Social Responsibility Campaigns to promote healthy consumption

In Argentina, there is concern about the low consumption of fruits and vegetables, especially amongst children. Bananas are the most popular fruit, with an average of 12 kilos per inhabitant. Marcelo Sibilia, head of the wholesaler Wiñay SA, confirmed this in an interview, assuring that consumption peaks in winter and declines ahead of the summer season. "In summer, there is a wider range of local fruits, such as peaches, pears, watermelons or grapes, so people stop consuming so many bananas."

Wiñay is a wholesale company devoted to the supply of fresh fruits and vegetables across the province of Cordoba, in central Argentina. However, its history has always been closely linked to the ripening and distribution of bananas in particular. Sibilia informed FreshPlaza that although there is domestic production in the north of the country, it is insufficient to meet the demand and therefore imports almost 80% of what is marketed. Ecuador is the world's largest banana producer, and is the country from which the most bananas are imported into the Argentinian market, followed by Bolivia. "The Ecuadorian banana is highly demanded by Argentinian consumers because of its excellent quality," stressed Marcelo Sibilia.

Wiñay is a dynamic and constantly developing company that always bets on the professionalism and quality of its products. In addition to bananas, it also works with other products, such as strawberries, apples, kiwis, pineapples, avocados or blueberries, among others. For this reason, it is considered as a company committed to healthy consumption in general. In fact, it has won prizes and distinctions in Argentina for its constant contribution to the promotion of fruits and vegetables.

Just this month, the company, in partnership with the firm Tropical Argentina, launched a new advertising campaign to motivate the youngest to consume fruit during the school day and while playing sports. With the slogans "Frutea Tu Escuela" and "Alimentá Tu Pasión", the companies are organising two competitions for schools and sports clubs so that the children themselves can tell through videos and posters why eating fruits does them good. The best entries will be awarded with sports clothing, technology equipment and annual fruit endowments for the whole of 2018.
