Dansk Supermarked lowers price of over 2,000 products at Føtex
Danish retail group Dansk Supermarked has announced that it is permanently lowering the prices of over 2,000 products at its Føtex supermarket chain. "We want to create Denmark's best shopping experience," said Thor Jørgensen, director of Føtex. "Not only measured on selection and quality, but also on price. We are therefore lowering prices significantly on the items that Danish people buy most." The first price reductions came into effect last week, with 350 products being repriced. Aldi will push ahead with a court case to gag the union representing truck drivers, which says the supermarket giant is pressuring drivers to meet schedules that are not safe. The Transport Workers Union accuses Aldi of using its wealth and size to bully drivers into unsafe practices including skipping rest breaks and truck maintenance in order to meet tight delivery times. The supermarket chain has brought a case in the federal court that seeks to stop the TWU from publishing material that suggests Aldi is putting the squeeze on transport companies and would ban the union from disrupting its operations. Online marketplace Paytm Mall and its main backer Alibaba, which are in talks to pick up a significant stake in online grocer BigBasket, have extended the exclusivity period of their negotiations by two weeks, according to two people familiar with the developments. The initial 45-day exclusivity period was to end on August 25. Paytm Mall and Alibaba are seeking to invest about $200 million in BigBasket at a valuation to be decided after due diligence is completed, these people said. Dutch retailer Jumbo has seen sales rise 4.7% to €3.76 billion in the first half of its financial year, with the business now holding a 19% share of the Dutch retail market. The group said that its revenue growth was almost entirely driven by its existing portfolio of stores (+4.0%), with the business outperforming the wider retail market, which averaged +2.7% growth. Whole Foods new fresh produce prices revealed
Amazon.com Inc. spent its first day as the owner of a brick-and-mortar grocery chain cutting prices at Whole Foods Market as much as 43 percent. At the store on East 57th Street in Manhattan, organic fuji apples were marked down to $1.99 a pound from $3.49 a pound; organic avocados went to $1.99 each from $2.79 and the price of some bananas was slashed to 49 cents per pound from 79 cents. The marked-down items had orange signs reading “Whole Foods + Amazon.” The signs listed the old price, the new price and “More to come.” (Bloomberg)

AU: Coles using Uber for home delivery
As one e-commerce giant arrives in Australia, Coles is looking to another tech giant to help beef up its online offering. Coles has started a home delivery trial with hi-tech tax service, Uber. In a first, Australia’s second largest supermarket, Coles, is operating a trial home delivery service in their Melbourne based Richmond store only, with Uber drivers delivering missing or replacement items from online orders. Dozens of H-E-B and Walmart stores remain closed in Houston and the Gulf Coast area as Tropical Storm Harvey continues to pound Texas with a torrent of rainfall. At least 30 H-E-B stores — including 25 in Houston — and 87 Walmart locations and distribution centers, with 31 stores in Houston, had closed throughout the state as of Monday afternoon, the companies said.
