Italy: Sipo focusing on exports to Ireland

"Drought has caused and is causing problems. We do have produce available, but not in the quantities expected. We will try to please all of our clients anyway," reports Massimiliano Ceccarini, manager of Sipo. He confirmed that the high temperatures and lack of rain have been worrying producers quite a bit.

"Prices are increasing also because of the lack of supplies. Quality is good, but volumes are not very abundant. For example, a vast crop of friggitello peppers in Cesena remained without water and quantities dropped drastically."

Washed, cleaned and packaged

In addition to selling on the domestic market, Sipo is increasing the percentage of its produce headed abroad. "We made a few contacts in Ireland and we expect to start exporting in Autumn. To us, Ireland means Dublin. Clients require premium range packaged vegetables, products with leaflets suggesting how to use them or reporting nutritional information and packaging that makes it easier to store and use the product."

Massimiliano is Sipo's general manager, while his sister Simona is the manager of "Nico", the company in charge of production processes. Their father Franco, founder of the company, is the crop production manager.

"In a period when many report difficulties in selling, I believe new valid ideas are the way forward. For example, our Verdure di Romagna range registered a 120% increase in sales per month during May, June and July 2017. Of course 2016 was just the start and we needed to strengthen our position this year, but a three digit increase means our choice was the right one."

Sipo uses domestic produce from Emilia-Romagna, Veneto, Fucino area, Campania and Puglia. It only imports few products when the domestic ones are lacking.

Sipo is also planning on expanding its organic (currently 12% of the total) and aromatic herb segments.
