China: Leek prices jump 80% in a fortnight

Hot summer weather, strong sunlight and heavy rain have affected vegetable production. In the middle of summer, market demand for vegetables exceeded supply. The absence of some varieties created a true "vegetable gap".

In July, the Ministry of Agriculture set a target that would mean the average prices of 28 varieties of vegetables could rise no higher than 7.5%. However, the price of leeks has been constantly growing since the beginning of September. During August it grew even more and in the mid-August it was already eight times more expensive. The price was about 2 yuan per kilogram, now it's 4.6 yuan. It is the highest price for leeks in the last five years.
