"Spanish mangoes have the same quality as air-shipped ones and are cheaper"

Spain: Mango season starts 15 days earlier

The mango season is starting in Malaga, where some producers are already harvesting the first mangoes. "We will start marketing the fruit as of 2 September," affirms José Antonio Alconchel, of Alcoaxarquía.

According to the producer and marketer from Malaga, "the campaign is starting about fifteen days earlier than usual because the mild winter temperatures have allowed for a good fruit setting, and this has also had an impact on the quality of the fruit, which is reaching very high standards, with a good colouring and very homogeneous calibres and a predominance of medium sizes," explains José Antonio.

The yield will not be very high, since it should be an OFF year, as it is known in the sector, but at the same time, new plantations are entering into production, which will compensate for the decline in the yields. "We expect between 10 and 15% more production in general in the sector."

"Given that the fruit has arrived earlier, we have had to advance the programs with our customers in the large retail sector, to which they have adapted without problems," states José Antonio Alconchel. "Our European customers are waiting impatiently for the Spanish mango, because although it is more expensive than the overseas mango, it has the same quality as the mango brought by plane from third countries, and its price is more competitive."

Alcoaxarquía markets only mangoes of Spanish origin, both conventional and organic, and mainly of the Osteen variety. The fruit is shipped mainly to markets like Germany, France and the Scandinavian countries. This year, Alcoaxarquía has opened a warehouse exclusively for the handling and packaging of organic products.
