Agrícola Famosa, one of the leading exporting firms of melons and watermelons from Brazil

Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará are the two states from Brazil where Agricola Famosa is located. The firm was established in 1995 and has approximately 2,000 hectares of production of melons and watermelons, which 90 to 95% are exported in the varieties Yellow Honey Dew, Gália, American Cantaloupe, European Cantaloupe, Piel de Sapo, seedless and seeded watermelons.

Agrícola Famosa is one of the leading producing/exporting firms of melons and watermelons from Brazil. Its main markets are UK, USA, Canada, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Germany, Russia, Austria, Portugal and Belgium.

Plagues (such as leaf miner and white fly) have been one of the problems for cultivation but thanks to the constant innovation and technological control by Famosa they have been controlled. Other problems are more difficult to solve since they are not of the total control of the company. Mr Cassiano Monte, representative by Famosa says: “Brazil has a big of potential. Still, there are several steps to be taken in order to optimize Brazil fruits production capabilities. The country has a lot of problems with infrastructure (roads, energy, etc) and also there is a little incentive from the government.”.

The campaign is almost at the end, and Famosa is already preparing the next to start in August. “We know this will be a difficult season mainly due to the exchange rate between the Real (R$) and the US Dollar, but we expect a better production turnouts which will counter balance the losses with the low dollar rate.” declares Cassiano Monte.

Agrícola Famosa is certified by EurepGap, Tesco´s Nature Choice and Dun & Bradstreet International
