Jaap Goud, Goud Biervliet:

“Crate filler creates calmness on line despite high capacity”

Onion trader Goud Biervliet BV is specialised in trading onions, growing first-year seed onions and selling seeds. The onion company in Zeelandic Flanders, the Netherlands, consciously decided not to do its own sorting and packing, but to play a role in the chain as a link between growers, packers and exporters. First-year seed onions have become a true speciality for the brothers Goud over the years.

In 2012, a newly constructed building with, among other things, crate storage, was once again realised. Because of this, the company is capable of receiving, drying and storing many onions in a short harvesting period. BURG Machinefabriek installed a crate filling installation and crate stacker and de-stacker for Goud Biervliet. The experiences of Jaap Goud with the line are very positive. “This crate filler creates calmness on the line, without compromising capacity. We usually do about 100 crates per hour, but it’s possible to do two crates per minute.”

“Stacks from two to five crates can be transported in the system at the same time, and it stacks the full crates per two again. With first-year seed onions it used to be an occasional problem to fill the crates evenly, but these problems have been solved by filling on the same line as the supply conveyor,” Jaap says. “Naturally there are some teething troubles. Our line is outside, so you’re dealing with rain, dust and sunlight, that means it was a challenge to optimally set up all sensors. Thanks to the good service from Burg, we definitely managed it!”
