Due to its temperate climate, Michigan is a popular state to grow zucchini. This summer however, temperatures have been milder and cool nights have affected zucchini production in the region.
Production down across the region
Production is down across the region, leading to a shortage of the product. One Michigan grower explains, "Our crop is down this year because the summer has not been overly warm and we've experienced some cool nights. The cooler weather has weakened growth rates and plant yield. This has been reflected across the state and as a result, customer demand has risen. There have been more customers calling us this year looking for zucchini because they're not able to fill their inventories. However, we can't help them out either because of the general shortage."
Imbalance of supplies and demand has led to increased prices
With more customers looking for zucchini, the extra demand has seen prices rise along with it. "The price today is much higher than it was say, 3-4 weeks ago", he continued. "Currently, the price for a half bushel of fancy zucchini is sitting at around the $12 - $12.85 mark. Less than a month ago, it was $7 - $8."
