Production of Chinese asparagus grows steadily

"As the largest asparagus producer worldwide, the production area of Chinese asparagus has been growing year after year, especially in Shandong, Zhejiang and Shaanxi, as it has become more and more popular among Chinese people. Compared to 2016, the total production quantity of Chinese asparagus will grow with 10%," states Mr. Xu Luqiu, vice CEO of the Heze Tianlan Fruit and Vegetable Collaborative.

Fresh asparagus breaking through the ground

"Heze in Shandong is the largest producer and exporter of asparagus in China. From 2007, it had China's largest export quantity of canned asparagus for seven years in a row. For the past three years, its export took up 40% of the total Chinese asparagus export. Cao county in Heze is famous as the "home of asparagus". Its production area is around 6000 hectares (60.000 mu), yielding over 700 tons of asparagus daily."

Processed asparagus

"The collaborative is a subsidiary of Shandong Tianjiu Industrial Group Co., Ltd. It was established in 2012, and holds over 40.000 square meters. It mainly produces food, such as frozen and fresh vegetables, fruit, and mushrooms. Its frozen asparagus are exported to several European countries, such as the Netherlands and Belgium. The production season for Shandong asparagus starts around 5 April, and ends at the end of June. The shelf life of fresh asparagus is relatively short, which is why many exporters choose to freeze them for export."

Sorted asparagus

"China exports over 50,000 tons of asparagus every year. This has been increasing year after year, because of the stable product quality and large market demand. This year's export price will be similar to last year's. We are optimistic about the future: firstly, apart from Chinese frozen asparagus, Peruvian asparagus are also very popular on the European market. However, the quality of Chinese asparagus is better, they have less fiber, and the price is lower. Furthermore, the collaborative is closely connected to the production sites, so it can get fresh produce, and process it quicky. This guarantees the product quality."
