Hans Maagendans, Banafood:

“Difficult banana market in summer, despite favourable weather”

The banana market never flourishes in the summer period, but this year it’s very calm. “It hasn’t often been as bad as it was in the past few weeks,” says Hans Maagendans from Banafood. “From week 30 there has really been a low point regarding sales and prices on the free market. And the weather circumstances have actually been favourable, because we didn’t have a long warm period.”

Hans finds it difficult to explain the tricky market situation. “Supply wasn’t even that high, although plenty of bananas were available. We did see that bananas from the former French colonies were sold at low prices. More bananas were eaten this year compared to last year, so that can’t be it. Fortunately the school holidays are nearly over again. I expect the market to recover somewhat because of this, and to wake up from its summer hibernation.”
