China: Prices of fruit and veg are heading in different directions

According to the voice of Chinese rural areas, zg3n.com.cn, the National Bureau of Statistics of China published a customer price index (CPI) for July, which showed that chain indexes increased. But while prices on vegetables increased by 7.0% since May, fruit prices, on the contrary, decreased by 9.2%. The wholesale value of vegetables continues to rise. This is especially true for green vegetables, which are already 5 times more expensive than they were in the last few years. At the same time, grapes, which cost 30 yuan per kilogram when most expensive, now dropped to 4 yuan per kilogram.

There are three main reasons why the prices of vegetables have grown since July. Firstly, the area of vegetables production changed, which caused financial losses. Secondly, the area of vegetables cultivation was reduced. And thirdly, hot weather and heavy rains affected vegetables badly.

Unlike soaring price of vegetables, fruit prices are decreasing all over the market. Fruits have good harvest years and bad harvest years too. This year's harvest was good, supply exceeds demand, so prices are going down. It's fruit season now and we can see clearly how prices are decreasing because there are too many fruits on the market. This year, the price of watermelons fell most significantly, especially Northeastern watermelons.
