Bart Roose now grows celeriac

"Red cabbages have been doing well for two years"

Last week saw the start of the harvesting of new cabbages in West Flanders. "We usually begin a month earlier, but the dry conditions meant the March crop did not grow well. We had to wait for the next crop, which looks great. We brought the first new white cabbages to the REO auction on Thursday, 17 August", says Bart Roose, a grower from Veurne.

Satisfied with red cabbages
He says they got about EUR 40 cents apiece for these cabbages at auction. "That is an acceptable price." They will start harvesting red cabbages in a few weeks. "Everything looks fine. It looks like we are going to have a good crop this season", he says. "All has gone well with the red cabbages since the beginning of the year. We got between EUR 50 and 60 cent per kg. That is EUR 1 to 1,50 euro per head. It went less well for white cabbage. Prices have been at about EUR 15 cent/kg, which is EUR 45 to 50 cent per head; not spectacular." According to Bart, it has been going well with red cabbages for two years already. "Demand is increasing and, if you ask me, less is being planted. We will see how the new season goes, but we remain positive."

Also celeriac
This producer has an area of about 35 hectares of red and white cabbage. He grows almost year-round. He supplies partly to the industry and partly to the fresh produce market via the REO Auction house. This season, he has also planted eight hectares of celeriac.
