Sweet Juillet variety did very well

A sweet apricot summer for Washington growers

Apricot growers in Washington are reflecting in delight on the season just past. The apricot season, which typically runs from early June to mid-August, has largely concluded in the region and conditions and market demand have ensured a sizeable crop this year.

One Washington producer has seen an increase this year on both fronts - in yield and demand. Steve Lutz, of CMI Orchards, was very pleased with this year's crop. CMI experienced a growth in production compared to last year. Moreover, they saw increased demand from both new and established customers. "At CMI we had a very positive season on apricots", says Lutz. "We had a larger crop than last year. Eating quality of the fruit was outstanding, which created incremental demand based on repeat orders from consumers."

Sweet Juillet variety did particularly well
For CMI, it was their Sweet Juillet variety that really outperformed and resulted in a higher price for their fruit. According to the company, this variety, which was first introduced in 2011, has a juicier flesh and added sweetness compared with other apricots on the market. Lutz further explained the impact that the Sweet Juillet has had on their business. "These are some of the sweetest, best-flavored cots on the market", says Lutz. "As customers and consumers compare our Sweet Juillet against regular cots the differences are obvious which expands demand during the season, but also builds incremental demand across seasons as more customers come back to us year after year."

Despite the increase in production, CMI have already sold out of their product for this year. If demand continues as they expect, apricots in this part of the world will continue to perform well as their appeal broadens.
