From more than EUR 2 to 75 cents

"Massive fluctuation in cauliflower prices"

On 14 August, there was a noticeable drop in cauliflower prices in Belgium. A Belgian trader called it a "brutal wave motion". "At the end of last week prices were at EUR2, 20. Today they suddenly cost 75 cents, which is a normal price."

"Last week's high price were due to supermarkets having promotions at the same time. All at once, there was a high demand. Consumers reacted to these high prices and declined to buy. This, in turn, caused a drop in market prices."

National holidays

Belgium had a national holiday on 15 August. The auction houses were closed on that day, and products normally sold on a Tuesday were moved to the Wednesday. According to the trader, the holiday has little effect on trade. "Besides cauliflower, there was very little price adjustments. The price for aubergines rose somewhat. On Friday it was 1,70/1,80 and today it is more than EUR2. Lettuces are a few cents more, and the price for tomatoes and courgettes also rose a little."
