China: Zhejiang grape industry to improve production processes

"This year, the production season of early ripe grapes from the Zhejiang area, such as black summer grapes and Fujiminori grapes, started around 22 May, and ended in the middle of June. Currently, red globe grapes are entering the market," states Mr. Wang Ronglin from Zhejiang Jiaxing Rong Lin Ecological Farm.

"The market for early ripe grapes now shows signs of polarization. For good grapes, the supply does not meet the demand, and the price is higher than last year. For bad grapes, the sales are barely satisfactory. Overall, however, this season is better than the last."

"Our ecological grape farm is located in Jiaxing, Zhejiang. It holds around 5 hectares (50 mu). We mainly grow red globe grapes, black summer grapes, and Fujiminori grapes. They are mostly sold through traditional sales channels to distributors and supermarkets in first and second tier cities in China."

Rows of grapes

"In the past few years, the total production volume of Chinese grapes has been growing year after year, but the production volume of high quality grapes is very limited. As grape farmers in Jiaxing, Zhejiang, one of the best areas in China, we are vigorously improving our production processes. According to the customer and market demand, we filter and grow products based on green and organic standards, so we can fill the gap on the Chinese market. That is the reason that the grape production volume of Jiaxing has been decreasing the past few years."

Big grapes

"By using a local industry development strategy, we are also improving the grape breeds that we are growing. The taste is better, their unique flavor is better, and they are better suited for transporting, as, for example, are the shine muscat grapes. When growing grapes, the biggest threats are plant diseases and insect pests. To effectively protect our grapes, we regularly test our soil, and use insect traps. We believe that, by taking timely prevention measures against plant diseases and insect pests, tackling key problems in growth technology, and reasonably using fertilizer, we can increase the quality of Chinese grapes. We are filled with confidence for the future."
