Nico Spruijt, Yex:

“Sales of larger avocados more difficult in the past weeks”

The avocado market continues to constantly grow. “Especially Ready-to-Eat avocados can actually always be sold. Those sales continue to go through the roof,” says Nico Spruijt from Yex. However, according to the salesman, the sales of larger sizes, which are often supplied hard (unripe) to far-off destinations, have been much more difficult in the past weeks.

“Lower prices are seen on the market for sizes 12 and 14. Our growers actually cannot grow them for that. Shortages can be seen in the small sizes 18 to 24. Market prices for smaller avocados are currently around 13/14 euro, but for larger sizes the prices are far lower,” Nico says. “The price of Ready-to-Eat avocados has been rising a bit in the past few days, and is now around €17.50.”

“Peru is currently the most important supplier, but we’ll receive the first avocados from Chile next week. Those prices generally start a bit higher. Hopefully that will also ensure a better spread in sizes. We had a fine summer, it’s just in recent weeks that we had trouble with the large sizes. Fortunately, Chile will have fewer large sizes.”
