Severe storm spared Polish apples

Despite reports of high temperatures in the last week, followed by severe storms, Marek Marzec from Ewa-Bis said that Polish apple production was not further affected and that everything was on track for a good season.

"Poland wasn't affected as much as other countries by the heatwave because it rains here every couple of days, so there was no need for emergency irrigation. We were also fortunate with the severe storms because it hit the Northwest of Poland where the forests are located, and missed the major apple growing region." said Marek.

"As a result of the good weather conditions, we are seeing good sized apples with great appearance."

Marek's personal estimate is that total Polish apple production for 2017 should fall around 4mln tonnes. In years past, many producers would sell most of the apples that they have left in October/November on for processing, but this year, with the shortage all around Europe, he said that most will choose to store in the hopes of getting higher prices throughout the year when supplies run low.
