Brazil targets Chinese fruit market

According to a report from the South American Press Network, China has been importing large quantities of fruit for the past few years. After seeing the potential of the Chinese market, the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil) has been working to develop the fruit trade between Brazil and China.

The Brazilian foreign trade website "Comex do Brasil" reported on 7 August that, because of the growth of online sales, the Chinese fruit consumption will continuously grow from 2017 until 2019 and the majority will be fresh fruit. This brings about opportunities for fruit producers in South America, such as Brazil.

Apex-Brasil also states that, compared to dried and candied fruit, Brazil focuses mainly on exporting fresh fruit to China. To open up the Chinese market, Apex-Brasil has published a research report on the Chinese fruit market. The report shows that 45% of the fresh fruit consumption in China is made up of melons. Bananas take up 5.8%. Moreover, the demand for lemons, for both consumption and industry development, on the Chinese market is very big.

Furthermore, Apex-Brasil points out that the demand keeps growing, because the Chinese consumers are also becoming more and more fond of new and exotic fruits, even though the prices of these products are rather high. Apex-Brasil also emphasizes that the fast development in the Chinese e-commerce makes it easier for consumers to buy fresh fruit online. Many small, middle and large scale companies are offering different kinds of excellent imported fruit for consumers to choose from.

Moreover, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) has been discussing fruit quarantine standards with the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China, and is preparing to sign a quarantine agreement.
