Menno Molenaar, Van Oers United:

“We’re quickly switching to Dutch sprouts”

The harvest of Dutch sprouts has started, and expectations for the new season are high. “The harvest looks perfect,” says Menno Molenaar from Van Oers United while he walks through one of the fields. “Of course, we are still in the prime corner. Crops are young and not yet fully grown, so yields are still limited. But at least the crops weren’t affected (yet) by drought or wetness.”

Year-round
Although the Dutch season is starting, sprouts haven’t been a seasonal product for Van Oers United for years. “We are therefore not starting up the market. Our customers want sprouts on their shelves year-round, and our business model is tuned to that. We make sure we can supply sprouts year-round, and to that end, we are always shifting the emphasis from one country of origin to another. During the period when the Netherlands isn’t in production, we buy from our own production locations in Morocco and France. It’s therefore all going according to plan. France has just finished its season, so now we can switch to the Dutch production,” Menno explains.

Food trend
Internationally, the quality of the Dutch sprouts is very well-known. “That’s why we switch to the Dutch sprouts as soon as possible. The sprout harvest depends on customer demand. Our production locations are spread over various regions, and we ensure that fresh product is available every day, with the help of our growers.” The clientele of Van Oers United is spread throughout Europe, and much is also sent to Scandinavia. The fact that sprouts have a positive image is the reason they want them on their shelves year-round. “It’s a food trend, consumers pick up on it, and start using it.”
