France : High volume of melons in June

According to the Minister of Agriculture, melon acreage in 2017 should increase by 1%. Production is expected to increase by 5% compared to 2016, to 262,000 tons, which is stable compared to the 2012-2016 average.

The sun and high temperatures favoured fruit maturity and development. Despite good weather conditions for melon consumption, the offer in June was more abundant than demand. Prices strongly decreased between the start and end of June and melons were declared in crisis from the 29th June. On average over the month, the prices remained 4% above the 2012-2016 average.
