California finger limes available with new certifications

Shanley Farms’ Citriburst finger limes are coming into its peak season as organic and Global Gap certified.

“We’re not into the heart of the bell curve yet but we’ve been climbing in terms of our harvest and we’ll see peak production in another month,” says Jim Shanley of Morro Bay, Ca.-based Shanley Farms. “That usually lasts through September and part of October and then supplies decline a little bit as we approach the holidays.” The timing of supplies dwindling directly contradicts the peak demand for finger limes which is the holiday season.

Supply of the limes is even with last year’s volume, notes Shanley. “There’s probably a few more trees this season coming into production but the overall production is down a bit per tree, so I think they’re kind of balancing each other out a bit,” he says.

Serving new customers
That said, volume is large enough to start welcoming new customers. “We have had excess demand for finger limes this season,” says Shanley. “We haven’t been filling all orders for new supplies but we are managing to get more of them now. Before we were just serving our traditional customers and holding new ones off.”

At the same time, Shanley will shortly be stocking two retailers with its long-planned jarred pearl product, which have a three-week shelf life and are stored in the refrigerator. “We think the natural place to market those is at the fish counter because everything at that counter is better with our pearls on them,” says Shanley. “We’re hopeful demand for those is robust.”
