China: Continuous rainfall leads price of Dongguan lettuce to double

Lately, rain has been failing continuously in Dongguan. Many fields have been flooded and many farmers have suffered losses. The majority of vegetables have been affected, with production volumes and quality dropping. Both fruit and leafy vegetables have turned yellow and have fallen down. Because of the rain, the overall prices have been rising. Especially the price for leafy vegetables has increased dramatically. If the rain continues, the prices will also continue to rise.

90% of vegetables are brought in from other areas. Because of the rain, the majority of local vegetables cannot grow in Dongguan, which means that the locals can only distribute some green beans and cabbages. The price increases of Indian lettuce, Chinese cabbage, lettuce and mustard have seen the largest rises. Especially the lettuce price has soared from 2.5 yuan before the rainy weather to 5 yuan now.
