Controlling disease in Australia's vineyards

Making just one mistake in disease management can have devastating results at harvest for dried fruit growers.

Dried Fruits Australia (DFA) is hosting a field day on Monday 14 August to help growers manage the two biggest disease risks – powdery mildew and downy mildew.

DFA consultant field officer Stuart Putland said plant pathology expert Peter Magarey would be on hand to discuss the latest management strategies.

“For diseases with similar names, there are huge differences in how to prevent and manage these critical grapevine infections,” Mr Putland said.

“Peter has extensive experience dealing with these diseases, including 33 years as a senior plant pathologist with the South Australian Government.

“Since 2009 he has been running his own research and consultancy company, Magarey Plant Pathology.”

Mr Putland said the field day was open to dried fruit growers across the region.

It will be held from 3.30pm to 6.30pm at Michael Dubois’ property, 630 Coorong Avenue, Red Cliffs. The event will conclude with a barbecue.
