Mexico: Michoacan's avocado production is declining

Michoacan remains the main avocado producer in national terms, but its production was showing a downward trend by June of the current year, as it accounted for 81 percent of the market share, when in March it accounted for 94.37 percent.

This is based on data provided by the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), which stated that "avocado production in June 2017 exceeded 883 thousand tons, 4.2 percent more than in the same month of the previous year, as a result of an increase in the area harvested."

In June of 2016, Michoacan planted 203.7 thousand tons and harvested 128.9 thousand tons of avocado. This year, the state sowed 220.3 thousand tons and harvested 177 thousand tons. The area planted also increased by 17 million hectares, compared to the previous year, as a result of the growth of demand for the fruit in the international market.

However, this number represents a decrease in production when compared to the previous months, as in March there were 115 thousand tons, in April 73,745, in May 59,861 and June closed with 18,195 tons.

In general terms, "the federative entities that contributed the most production up to June 2017, compared to the same month of 2016, are: Michoacán with 18.2 thousand tons, Mexico States with 13,074 tons, and Veracruz with 4,277 tons."

Michoacan remains the main producer at the national level and it is also the entity with the largest acreage. In June it produced 81 percent of the accumulated volume, followed by Jalisco, which contributed 7.6 percent, and the State of Mexico with 6.1 percent of the total.
