China: Production volume and quality of Panzhihua mangoes remain stable

"Panzhihua is not affected by hurricanes or rain. With its natural greenhouses and no winter, it is China's, and even the world's, largest mango production area, with the highest latitude, highest elevation, latest ripening season and best quality products. Panzhihua mangoes only become ripe in September and October, which is one to two months later than in other Chinese mango production areas," according to Mr. Fu Zuhong from Miyi Feng Hui Trading Co., Ltd.

"Because the breed is different, Panzhihua mangoes enter the market every year in May, and stop in October. Because of Panzhihua's excellent geographical location, with sufficient sunlight and reasonable rainfall, the production volume and quality have been stable for years. Nationwide, a growth in production has caused this year's price to be worse than last year, but the price of Panzhihua mangoes is still strong. It has not dropped at all compared to last year."

"Our mango production sites are located in Panzhihua in Sichuan, and comprise over 100 hectares (1000 mu). Our own production site is around 50 hectares (500 mu). The other 50 hectares (500 mu) are owned by farmers we collaborate with. We grow Keitt mangoes, Guifei mangoes, golden mangoes, and Jilu mangoes. The production volume per mu is 3 to 4 tons. While growing mangoes, the weather influences the production volume. If it rains a lot, the fruit will rot and get infected. To make sure that the damage by the weather is minimal, our research and development team regularly performs inspections and tests at our production sites."

"Currently, our mangoes are mainly sold through traditional offline sales channels to distributors in Chengdu and Chongqing. A small quantity is also sold online. In the past few years, Panzhihua mangoes have been getting more and more popular on the market. The total export volume is growing. Through opening the market in the last years, we now have a stable customer base. In the future, we plan to expand to Shanghai and Beijing as well. When the time is right, we also wanted to expand abroad. We hope to be able to work together with experts to improve our business, so we have the opportunity to let even more foreign consumers taste our high quality Panzhihua mangoes."
