Italy: Only 35% of Melinda apples are expected

Expectations for the Melinda apple production depend on the area, although only 35% of the total production is forecast. The varieties most affected are Golden and Renetta, while it is presumed that the other varieties, including Stark, Fuji and Gala, will do better. This is what reported by Federico Barbi, sales manager for the Consortium.

"We will indeed have Melinda produce to destine to our markets, but there will be a lot fewer apples in Europe in general."

The current sales campaign is actually going quite well. "We slowed down sales so prices increased. In fact, instead of ending the sale of the 2016 produce on September 30th, we decided to extend them until 15th-20th November. This way, margins will be higher. The frost damaged this year's harvest, but results will be positive for 2016."

Cherries
The cherry campaign will end towards the end of next week. "Between us and La Trentina, we reached 310 tons in total, i.e. 36-37% of what expected due to frost in April."

"Even though volumes are low, prices are quite satisfactory."
