China: Popularity of mangosteens on the rise

From July, large quantities of mangosteens have entered the market. As opposed to the prices of over 20 yuan per 500g in recent years, mangosteens are now being sold for only 10 yuan per 500g, making them a lot more popular. The majority of mangosteens on the market right now are imported from Thailand. In the past, there were also mangosteens from Malaysia and Vietnam, but the Thai mangosteens are sweeter and better, so they are now playing a leading role on the market.

The harvest of mangosteens in South-East Asian countries usually starts at the end of June. Fruit distributors in the north all bring in fruit from southern cities in Guangzhou and Yunnan. Because transport is so easy, the local supply becomes more and more efficient. Last year, the lowest price for mangosteens was around 8 yuan per 500g. The current price is already lower than at the beginning of the sales season, and as the supply is growing, there is still room for the price to drop even more in the near future.
