Competition getting stronger on table grape market

"The Vittoria grapes campaign started in early June at Paimfrut Soc. Coop. Agricola a.r.l., slightly later than usual due to particular weather and soil conditions."

This was reported by Domenico Sergi, President of Paimfrut, when analysing the grape campaign.

"In particular, the Brix level did not reach the level needed in time, so we had to wait for it to reach the medium-high standards expected."

"The problems caused by the weather were worsened by the fact that some producers started to sell the fruit before it was fully ripe, thus leading to a drop in prices on both the Italian and foreign markets."

"I believe the main difficulty for exporters today is competition. There is a lot of produce available on the market, especially from India, South Africa and Chile."

"If, to this, we add the fact that the grape season has also started in Egypt and Israel and that Turkish and Moldavian grapes can also be found at cheaper prices, we can see how this is an unequal fight. We have to compete with countries with lower production costs that sell their produce at prices that sometimes are lower even than our own production costs."

"Anyway, our Victoria grapes reached medium-high targets. Paimfruit will then continue with the Red Globa variety, which will also be available on foreign platforms thanks to the contracts we signed after Macfrut in Rimini"

"Luckily we start off early and the fact that the early produce is very popular is an additional point of strength for us."

"We work a lot with the Netherlands, Great Britain, Poland, Germany and France. In addition, the long shelf-life of the Red Globe variety means we can reach numerous extra-EU destinations."

"We export containers by sea to Brazil, Arab Emirates, South Africa, Pakistan and Nigeria.

The company owns multiple brands including Paimfrut, Egň, Agriment, Amasole and The Grower that meet the specific needs of a vast clientele. The quality-check and traceability system guarantees food security also thanks to certifications.

In 2016, Paimfrut exported approximately 50 containers overseas and this year expects to double the quantities.

Domenico Sergi amd Ada Santonocito, sales director for Paimfrut.

"We are growing as, on top of our trusted clients, new opportunities have added. Weather permitting, we should be able to commercialise Red Globe both in Italy and abroad at least until December," concluded sales director Ada Santonocito.
