Richard Kruijer, Tuindersbelang:

"Old white cabbage mainly going to fresh cut"

There's new red and white cabbage on the market again, says Richard Kruijer of Tuinderbelang. The market for old red cabbage has been empty for a week or two. "The early red is cut of at 1.5 to 2 kilo, as there is money to be made in it. There is still old harvest in white cabbage, the new harvest is coming and growers are happy to sell for the current prices."

The market for the old and new white cabbage is going to vary says Richard. "England demand old cabbage for a long time. On the European mainland the first new Danish goes to southern Europe. The fresh cut still want old cabbage as it absorbs the dressing better. New cabbage is slightly more fatty, the dressing slides off it easily." Richard therefore expects that the old cabbage will still sell. The prices of white cabbage aren't at their best. "Bad money has been made with white cabbage for a number of years. The market for red cabbage is still quite clean, good prices can still be made there."

Tuinderbelang handles regular white and red cabbage for around 120 growers.
