Much of the fruit is locally sourced from growers in California’s Central Valley, though Horizon does turn to Chilean growers from January to May to supplement the program. Horizon’s Robert Delatorre also notes that the company may expand the product to add stone fruit such as nectarines and peaches to the portion packs in the coming seasons.
The educational connection
To Delatorre, the launch of the brand is the further extension of the concept that Horizon is supporting both the produce industry and the educational system as well. “Sweet Bunches is not just a snack or just fruit,” he says. “It’s part of a much bigger picture that we’re trying to create. We want to support our school districts and our kids and schools and parents with the right information.”
That means it’s grown from its original mission to create quality snacks for kids. Today, it has also created the Horizon Educational Centre, which supports schools in applying for grants and funding. “A lot of school districts are unsustainable because they operate with grants,” he says. “Horizon Marketing has a grant division that will support school districts as long as they buy into our program, we will support them by writing grants for them and helping them apply for them.”
