Monterey Mushrooms increases organic capacity

As the number of natural and organic retail outlets continues to expand, so does the capacity for Monterey Mushrooms to meet that demand.

In 2016, 8 percent of the company’s total sales were organic, with 23 percent of the company’s production dedicated to organic growing, but that amount can be increased to meet demand with very little notice, said Mike O’Brien, vice president of sales and marketing.

"Our growers and harvesters embraced this new challenge and are pleased with the results,” O’Brien said. "We are uniquely positioned to supply the freshest organic mushrooms to retailers and food service customers throughout the nation."

Organic line on display at Organic Produce Show
In October the company introduced a specialty organic line that includes king trumpet, beech, maitake, shiitake, oyster and enoki mushrooms in award-winning sustainable packaging that includes graphics with usage ideas, product facts and how-to-cook instructions. The paper tills are recyclable, biodegradable and compostable. The company will be exhibiting its organic line at the Organic Produce Show in booth 508.

“Shoppers are asking for organic mushrooms; the exotic varietals are delicious and make the home chef feel like a culinary expert,” O’Brien said. "Organics are the fastest growing segment in the mushroom category.”

According to the Organic Trade Association, sales of organic food increases by the double digits annually, and more than 80 percent of parents reported buying organic food for their families last year. Nielsen research found dedicated organic buyers will cross channel shop and purchase private label organics to sustain their lifestyle commitment.
