Dramatic price increase for China's lemon exports

"The main production areas of Chinese lemons are mostly located in Tongnan near Chongqing, Anyue in Sichuan province, Hainan province, and Dehong in Yunnan province. In total, they comprise around 80,000 hectares (800,000 mu). Annually, they produce approximately 1 million tons of fresh lemons," says Luo Gang of Huida Lemon.

Anyue has around 80% of the total production volume of lemons in China. The harvesting time for lemons from Anyue starts in September every year, and ends in December. After December, the lemons on the market will be stored in refrigerated warehouses, and supply last until July of the next year.

"Influenced by the weather of last December, compared to the previous production season, the production of Anyue lemons was reduced by 50%. This will improve by the next production round. The production volume will then grow by 20%-30%."

"This large drop in lemon production causes a rise of the market price, and especially the export price. For example, the export price of lemons to Russia is almost 60% higher than in the same period last year. Moreover, the export volume has decreased dramatically. This is mainly because the production volume is low and the price is high."

"Divided over Anyue and Tongnan, our company has around 1,000 hectares (10,000 mu) of production sites and processing facilities. We offer over 300 products made from lemons, such as lemon drinks, foods, cosmetics, and health products. Apart from selling our products through the traditional channels to large distribution markets in first and second tier cities in China, we also export them through the ports of Shenzhen, Khorgos and Manzhouli to markets abroad, such as South-East Asia and Russia. The proportion of domestic and international sales is now around 6:4. In the future, while developing our current markets, we also aim to improve our products and to sell better quality lemons to our customers."
