Italy: Promoting Radicchio di Verona IGP

Consorzio di Tutela del Radicchio di Verona Igp continues to promote its produce. Some mini-rugby tournaments have been held in Verona over the past few days, and the consortium supplied its radicchio as an ingredient to Clubhouse chefs.

"Thanks to the work of many chefs, the public has reconsidered radicchio over the past few years and appreciated its capability of adapting not only to dishes from the Venetian tradition, but to dishes from all over Italy," explained President Cristiana Furiani.

Cristiana stresses how Radicchio di Verona Igp has great potential both in the catering business and everyday cuisine. "The most difficult thing is to reach all consumers. Of course radicchio is well-known in Veneto, but it's not as popular in other regions. In addition, retailers don't want too many limitations while Pgi products are always linked with specifications."

Radicchio di Verona Igp can be used to prepare many savoury and sweet dishes

Distribution is not widespread and many still don't know about Radicchio di Verona Igp. In addition, the produce is not always readily available to chefs. "There is still a lot to be done."

At the moment, Geofur moved production to Trentino, where the lower temperatures enable a better development of the entire radicchio range. "We still have some radicchio from Veneto in stock and have just started harvesting in Trentino."
